Set between the end of Vicious and the beginning of Vengeful and illustrated by artist Enid Balam ( Hawkeye: Kate Bishop, Omni) the story introduces new characters into the world of those with extraordinary powers. ![]() This year, the award-winning author did give fans a taste of the future of the Villains series in her comic Extraordinary. But Schwab, with 22 books under her belt to date, has been busy with her Shades of Magic series, The Adventures of Addie LaRue, her children's books, an upcoming Netflix series, and a host of other projects. Fans have been clamoring for a third novel in the Villains series for years. Schwab's hit 2013 novel Vicious and 2015 sequel Vengeful. ![]() ![]() Fittingly, three of the four sections of the book are named after the women in these relationships: Selah, Yara and Odalys.Įach woman our narrator has dated is fascinating in her own way, but for me, the more interesting aspect of these chapters is the way in which the narrator acts within these relationships and the ways in which the narrator uses the women as either a muse or an anti-muse for the thesis. Our narrator tells the timeline of their attempts to complete the thesis through the lens of the major relationships that consumed them throughout the decade. They’re brilliant, funny, slightly narcissistic and deeply melancholic. Our narrator is an unnamed and ungendered (more on that later) late 30s PhD student who has spent at least a decade toiling away on their ambitious and amorphous thesis. ![]() It’s a book you have to be tuned into to enjoy. It’s not a beach read, nor a curl-up-on-a-rainy-day read. I really liked this book, when I was in the right headspace for it. Who has quarantine made me become? That’s such a trite thing to say. I was about to start this review with the line, “I really enjoyed this novel, but I’ll warn: it’s not for everyone.” Ugh. ![]() ![]() Neither the city nor the man can do much to really attract the attentions of a beautiful youth, those days are gone for both. The facade Venice puts on to attract visitors is mirrored in the fancy suits the fifty plus man wears in an attempt to make himself attractive. Its decay, its age, its vulnerablity to disease are all mirrored in Aschenbach. ![]() The city becomes a metaphor for Aschebach. Aschenbach indulges in his obsession, staying on at the hotel as long as he can, in spite of the very real threat of a cholera outbreak in the emptying city. Aschenbach can see what the boy looks like, but he does not know him in any real way. Is Aschenbach a man in love or just a man obsessed? He learns as much as he can about Tadzio from secondhand sources like the hotel barber, but his knowledge remains so limited that the Tazio he comes to love is largely a Tadzio of his own imagination. ![]() He never attempts to meet the boy or to speak with him though he does learn his name, Tadzio, and quite a bit of his family history. Show More staying at the same hotel as the boy, so he studies the boy's daily habits, making sure that he is at the beach when the boy will be, ready for breakfast when the boy is, he even follows his family when the boy goes on tours of the city. ![]() ![]() His interest goes beyond local weather, as well. ![]() His brothers will even decide what to wear based on the different types of weather we’ll experience. Then, he’ll write this information on a dry erase board, which has come in handy for the rest of the family. And he’ll give us the precise hour when sunrise and sunset happen, as well as the different types of clouds we’re going to have. He’ll check if our mornings will start with heavy fog, and if so, the time of day when it’ll finally lift. ![]() He likes to know when we’re going to have a rainy day, the highs and lows for the day, or the day’s humidity.
