![]() ![]() The result is a book which will be read with equal enjoyment by those already familiar with Muhammadﷺ's life and those coming to it for the first time. He has adopted a style which is at once extremely readable and reflects both the simplicity and grandeur of the story. ![]() Martin Lings has an unusual gift for narrative. Based on Arabic sources of the eighth and ninth centuries, of which some important passages are translated here for the first time, it owes the freshness and directness of its approach to the words of men and women who heard Muhammad ﷺ speak and witnessed the events of his life. Martin Lings? life of Muhammad ﷺ is unlike any other. ![]() ![]() As a reader I felt transported in time and place- especially to LA in the 1980s. Not only does Bennett share these lives, she is outstandingly skillful at merging the individual stories with the historical context. In particular it opens a conversation on the complexity of identity and how we all change in ways large and small as we absorb our lives and our lives absorb us. The novel progressively reveals more and more intimacies, including the many layers of each character alongside their relationships. The Vanishing Half offers us this opportunity extravagantly, opening the door wide to share varied lives, very personally. Fiction provides the opportunity for us to empathize with individuals that we otherwise might never meet or even understand. ![]() ![]() ![]() Over seven years, he had compiled a list of the unit’s suspected attacks on 141 companies across nearly two dozen industries, but he needed solid evidence before he could name them. In “The Perfect Weapon: War, Sabotage, and Fear in the Cyber Age,” New York Times national security correspondent David Sanger writes that the U.S.-based cybersecurity firm Mandiant penetrated a Chinese military cyber unit after it hacked into one of its customer’s systems in order to nail down attribution.Īccording to Sanger, while Mandiant observed Chinese hackers breaching a client several years ago, they used it as an opportunity to target the attackers’ systems, which allowed access to a video camera that exposed the hackers’ faces: was certain the hackers were part of Unit 61398, but he also knew that accusing the Chinese military directly would constitute a huge step for his company. The company that authored a watershed report on how Chinese hackers operate is pushing back against claims in a new book that the research was conducted through the use of illegal offensive hacking techniques. ![]() ![]() The solid, iron-rich inner core is 149 miles (240 kilometers) in radius. ![]() The Moon’s core is proportionally smaller than other terrestrial bodies' cores. StructureĮarth's Moon has a core, mantle, and crust. Because Earth is moving as well – rotating on its axis as it orbits the Sun – from our perspective, the Moon appears to orbit us every 29 days. The Moon makes a complete orbit around Earth in 27 Earth days and rotates or spins at that same rate, or in that same amount of time. ![]() And a "new moon" occurs when the far side of the Moon has full sunlight, and the side facing us is having its night. During a "full moon," the hemisphere of the Moon we can see from Earth is fully illuminated by the Sun. The changing illumination is why, from our perspective, the Moon goes through phases. As the Moon orbits Earth, different parts are in sunlight or darkness at different times. Some people call the far side – the hemisphere we never see from Earth – the "dark side" but that's misleading. The Moon is rotating at the same rate that it revolves around Earth (called synchronous rotation), so the same hemisphere faces Earth all the time. ![]() Credit: NASA Visualization Technology Applications and Development (VTAD) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() DCI Thomas Nightingale, a survivor of the Battle of Ettersburg, the only serving police officer who is also a classically trained wizard, and at the opening of Rivers of London, the only member of the Folly, finds himself dealing with an abnormal caseload as magic erupts all over the city. The overarching narrative posits that while the use of magic might have dwindled after the Second World War (thanks in part to thousands of magicians, on both sides of the war, being annihilated during one particular battle), suddenly magicians seem to be active again, and their intentions are not benign. What place do wizards have in twenty-first-century policing? Obviously, given that Rivers of London was the first in a series, more than you might initially suppose. It’s generally known as "the Folly," in reference to its base of operations, but implicit also is the idea that the continuing existence of such a unit is anachronistic nonsense. ![]() Aaronovitch coupled the idea of the breezy police procedural with that well-worked fantasy trope of secret London, creating a small and obscure special unit which lurks under the capacious aegis of the Metropolitan Police, and dedicates itself to investigating cases where the occult represents a clear threat to the citizens of London. It is not difficult to see why Ben Aaronovitch's first novel, Rivers of London ( Midnight Riot in the US, 2011) attracted so much attention. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I’m also excited to read his other series, UGLIES, set right before this one, about the people who had cosmetic surgery to be beautiful or one of the Specials. Because of that, there are so many possibilities for other spinoff books about the time metal reigned supreme and even just different regions and their customs. It’s clear that Westerfeld spent a lot of time crafting this world. After an unexpected turn of events, Frey finds herself in a position to free them both, but true to fashion, her father is quite the indomitable opponent and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. As such, Frey was raised to be Rafia’s body double, or in other words, Frey was born to die for her sister. Frey was born about twenty minutes after her older sister and twin, Rafia. Usually this would mean she’d have quite a luxurious life, but instead, she’s been raised a secret. Frey is the daughter of the first family of Shreve, a strong military town with a terrifying leader, her father. IMPOSTERS by Scott Westerfeld is a YA dystopian novel, set in the future after many different and unique time periods have passed. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() However that does not go for all the stories. It is without purpose, with little real humour and no drama. Ironically the title short story is, whilst drawing on the fondness of memory of that other book, in my opinion quite easily the weakest story in the collection. That was until I picked this up whilst Christmas shopping in Exeter. This may or may not be true, though I remember reading 'Here be dragons' and quite enjoying it, but it cannot be denied that for myself CCF is probably the only book of hers that i would return to. The one thing everyone seems to know of Stella Gibbons is that she wrote one book ' Cold Comfort Farm' and then she was destined to have it hang around her neck like the famous albatross for the rest of her less than stellar career. ![]() ![]() ![]() But her desire for revenge may cost her country its chance at freedom and Nina the chance to heal her grieving heart. If this series was meant to elaborate on their history and introduce them for a newer audience, I’m not sure that was accomplished. ![]() There are a couple of rumors floating around that there might be a Eternals movie, which if true would end up seeming like Marvel is trying to play catch up with DC on announcing a New Gods movie. The Eternals were originally a group of Jack Kirby characters (I know you could tell that by just looking at their outfits, but it needed to be said for posterity’s sake) who were creations of the Celestials made to protect Earth millions of years before present day. Admittedly, the Eternals are a part of Marvel I never fully understood, and I can’t say that after reading this I understand much more. ![]() ![]() The novel becomes even more convoluted when Thomas decides to travel back in time through a secret portal on the castle grounds in order to rescue Iolanthe before her untimely death and bring her to the 21st century. When restless tycoon Thomas McKinnon visits an ancient Scottish castle he had purchased on a whim, he's stunned to find the crumbling keep teeming with ghosts. ![]() |
